Built at Gorton as British Rail EM2 (later Class 77) 27001 in 1953, it was used on the Woodhead trans-Pennine route until the Class 77s were withdrawn in September 1968. All the Class 77s were bought by Nederlandse Spoorwegen in 1969, reclassified as NS Class 1500 and numbered 1501 - 1506.
